PRS is a UK based society of songwriters, composers and music publisherswith global presence. It licenses organizations to play, perform or make available copyright music on behalf of its members and collects the royalties of the works assigned to them. It also works collectively with overseas copyright societies, in collecting and distributing the royalties to them fairly and efficiently.
Speaking on the occasion, Guy Fletcher,Chairman PRS, said,
“As creative people, we operate on a very small scale but in changing times we are up against big giants, which are your multinational organizations; who use our work for commercial purposes". Fletcher has been
a songwriter since 1962 and has written songs for luminaries like Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard. He also pointed out some of the malpractices of the UK Publishing Industry in the 60s. He stressed the importance of Copyrights for any artiste, especially a lyricist. He further said,
Guy Fletcher, Anand ji and Mr. Myles Keller
"It’s very important to safeguard your Copyright because that is something which remains under your name for 60 years after your death and benefits your next two generations. You should not give away your Copyright because it fetches you your royalties. It’s of utmost importance that we get together and hold a collective voice to protect our Copyrights on an international platform.”
Myles Keller, another official from PRS took the cause
forward and gave a formal introduction of the PRS, stating impressive facts and figures about the organization which celebrates its 100th anniversary in the year 2014.He said
"Copyright in music is how our 90,000 members - songwriters, composers and music publishers - earn their living. Our members license their rights through us rather than doing it individually, making it easier and more efficient for those who want to use music to do so legally by obtaining a licence from us.
We are owned by and accountable to our members. After deducting the costs of running our organisation, all the income we receive from licence fees is distributed back to our members.
We are the UK's leading collecting society and part of a global network of societies. In most cases a licence from us gives those who want to use music the right to legally use millions of copyrighted songs and music compositions registered around the world.
In terms of music copyright, there are people who write and publish songs and musical compositions, and people who perform and produce recordings. We deal with the former, while Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) deal with the latter.Wherever recorded music is used for public purposes it is likely that a licence will be required from PPL in addition to one from PRS for Music: separate payments for the use of separate rights. PPL and PRS for Music are separately owned by their respective members but we both seek a secure environment for music copyright and work to promote its value both in the UK and overseas.
Recent transformations within the music industry have significantly impacted the way music is accessed and used: across borders, across boundaries and on a diverse array of devices. We are meeting the challenges of music in the digital age by ensuring that music rights can be licensed across borders, in an accurate, transparent and efficient manner.
Our aim is to demystify the licensing process so everyone better understands how our members’ rights are licensed and the value that copyright represents to the UK economy." |
Right Society Limited (IPRS) in India, but many members
are not happy the way IPRS share their revenues
with stake holders. The number of people gathered to listen Fletcher and company, it shows that creative people in India are in a lookout for alternate platform for IPRS. The management of IPRS needs to do honest introspection and speed up settlement, in case they want to remain sole protector of creative people.
