FICCI FRAMES 2015 : Government Was Not Visible

Mumbai 25th March 2015 Over a period of last 10 years, Apex body of Indian Trade and Industry, FICCI has tried placing entertainment business in the centre stage through its annual event FICCI Frames. It was also a sincere effort to bring all the stakeholders of entertainment business on the same page and on a single platform. But this year I noticed that everyone was there but the Government was not there. Industry expects that Minister for Trade and Industry, Information & Broadcasting as other important officials will be available for listening to the problems and provide some immediate assurances and solutions but to represent the government only J. S. Mathur, Addl Secretary MIB was present in the inaugural session. The most thought provoking views were expressed by Harit Nagpal, head of TataSky. He emphasized that in case TV has to survive than the channels should stop copying contents of other channels. If there is a serial hit on a GEC, other GEC will soon follow the contents, similarly in news genre every channel try to copy Arnav Goswamy and Barkha Datt, with he result many find it difficult to survive, so the mantra for survival is to do different and look different. Harit has also raised another point, most of the content production facilities are confined to Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderbad or Chennai, why not contents are created at smaller centres in the other parts of country, which may bring more diversity, richness of regions and close to people. He also lauded the fruits of digitization, it has created more jobs for youth and more revenue to Government and other stakeholders. Veteran Star Kamal Haasan, who is also head FICCI MEBC South, has raised certain pertinent points. He said that in the ever changing entertainment business there should not be a room for complacency and content should be given due importance. J S Mathur while representing government, outline emergence of newer business models and new business platforms of entertainment, he was also particularly excited to see reinvention of Radio. He also said after formation new government at centre time in approvals and sanctions his no place as cut down. Everybody present in the audience appreciated straight talk by Hero and Youth Icon Amir Khan. He said he never bother to see KPMG Report on business of entertainment or about the box office collection as he devote his time in his work. He has a feel that our industry has adopted latest hardware introduced in the world market but little thought is given to improving software i.e. content. He also stressed on improving the quality of children’s contents. Ramesh Sippy co-chair FICCI Entertainment Committee, in his remarks said that all entertainment platforms are merging one can not depend upon a single platform for moving images, so for survival contents has become very important.
