Censor Board Chief want to convert celluloid medium in Amar Chitra Katha
There is an urgent need to start a debate on recent decisions made by newly appointed Chairman of CBFC Shri Pahlaj Nihlani. He has banned use of cuss words, double meaning words and 'Bombay' in the films. People across the film industry are livid over his decisions and seeing it as interference in the creative process. Film business over the years has changed drastically, new business avenues have opened, TV screening is big source of revenue, but a film can be shown on a TV channel when it is awarded Universal certificate. Earlier, Leela Samson, an acclaimed Bharatnatyam dancer, headed CBFC from 2011. I found her very open to industry's creative suggestions, she initiated open dialogue with industry to march with the changing time. The breaking point regarding her resignation along with other Board members is said to be the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal's (FCAT) green signal to the release of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's controversial film "MSG - The Messenger of God" despite the decision of the CBFC to deny clearance to the film. It will be interesting to note that the only thing gone in favour of Mr. Nihlani's appointment as Board Chief is his election campaigning for Mr. Modi. It is a well known fact that Commercial Ad for Modi's election campaign 'Har Har Modi, Ghar Ghar Modi' was produced by Mr Nihlani. Now it appears that Mr Nihlani is hell bent to carry Parivar's cultural agenda. Mr Pahlaj Nihlani was also co-hosted the first big public meeting of head of Dera Sachcha Sauda at BKC ground and also said to be instrumental in getting his controversial and self glorifying film MSG passed. There are certain dissent voices within board also like Ashoke Pandit. He said that he as a member of board was not consulted and he does not endorse the list issued by the Chairman. He feels that this is against freedom and creative liberty of a film maker. He gives an example suppose a film is made on life of Dawood Ibrahim than he will use language his character uses and not what a saint would. The fact is in recent years Indian cinema has evolved, despite certain run of the mill movies, it is closer to real life, the characters shown also appear to be convincing. With the result films like Omkara, Dirty Picture, Vicky Donor, Chandni Bar received national honor despite use of cuss words. Who has suggested Mr Nihlani not to use word Bombay in the movie despite the fact that IIT is still called IIT Bombay, High Court is still Bombay High Court ! Benaras was renamed as Varanasi almost 40 years back but still most of the people still call it Benaras. Similarly despite the fact that Bombay has officially renamed as Mumbai, world over many people call it Bombay. To many of us, Mr Nihlani seems to be turning India Films into some sort of celluloid version of toon strip Amar Chitra Katha, there is a need for the entire film fraternity to come on a common platform and to save film as creative medium. Public has power to reject movies which are below the mark.
