Do Civil Societies Need Censor Board

Well known film producer Pahlaj Nihlani has been appointed by BJP government. Other new members are also either  RSS activists or right leaning gentlemen or women. The notification came after resignation of Leela Samson and her team of the Board as a protest. The Board felt slighted by the Film Certification Appelate Tribunal that overturned the Censor Board's decision to deny a cretic ate to 'MSG : The Messenger of God' made and starred by Gurmeet Ram Raheem Singh Insan chief  of Dera  Sacha Sauda. Keep in mind GRR Singh and his Dera has openly supported BJP in Haryana Assembly election despite unpleasantness of its national ally Akali Dal.

Pahlaj Nihlani is no doubt a reasonably good film maker but also known to be a part of team who run Narendra Modi's election campaign.

Present Government was unhappy that Leela Samson was a political appointee just because her close proximity with Priyanka Gandhi, people also say that at one particular time she used to be dance teacher of Pryanka. So on the same premise that charge is equally valid against my friend Pahlaj Nihlani and his team. If theoldgovernment was using political discretion to grant and deny certificates, dictate cuts, or let a film go without cuts, then the new lot will be no different.

The bigger question is : whether the country really need a Censor Board at all ? We may also emulate decent democracies like US, UK and France, just allow films to be rated and certified by the film industry. What business is it of the Government to clear films  for public screening. It is my past experience that there were religious,  caste or so called cultural zealots who have power to instal screening of any movie, Billu Barber has to change its name only Billu as barber is a derogatory word for that community. Rightist Hindus tried to stop shows of shows of PK as it had shown our so called saints. In that case Censor Board is a meaningless structure or merely a tool to support government line in the field of entertainment.
