Now a days, lot of efforts are being made to establish something synonym to Indian abroad, that includes Narendra Modi,Yoga et al, But the fact remains that Bollywood is strongest identity of Indian diaspora abroad. And when we talk about Indian diaspora, Pakistanis , Bangladeshis, Nepalis also proudly associate with this Bollywood magic. Last year, I was in Kent and visited Nan and Curry, a restaurant owned by a Pakistani. I stayed there for an hour. There was display of lot of posters of old as well as new Bollywood Hits in the dining area. All the songs played on its system were Bollywood hits.
Even the Mediterranean restaurants in US cities also follow the same trend. Yesterday, I was at Garlic Crush, a popular Mediterranean food place, every second or third song played on their music system was a Bollywood song.
Today I was overjoyed to see Bollywood Popcorn, a brand developed by Trader's Joe a chain of organic food in US. This Popcorn is a kind of experimentation. The Popcorn features flavor similar to Chicken Tikka Masala, but it does not contain any chicken or any kind of meat .The air popped corns are tossed with savory spicy seasoning mix of turmeric, mustard seeds, cardamom and garam masala. Needless to say that in few weeks Bollywood Popcorn is super duper hit like Bollywood movies in the isles of Trader Joe's outlets.
Do you know why everyone, who has any connection with India or nearby country, staying in any continent love to be identified with Bollywood ? Very simple answer : these movies are very light on brain, light-heart and easy to follow. Tough the language is Hindi but the industry is comprised of every region of India with an occasional Tadka of Pakistani, Bangladeshi or Srilankan talent. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka also produce movies every year but they completely lack that kind of charm. no surprise when Indians have get together abroad they do not miss Bollywood, children sing song or dance at its tune, the elder one prefer to run latest Bollywood release or just play song to bring right mood to the party. I saw in a ISCON temple in US along with sanskar classes they are also running Bollywood style dance classes !
I have noticed that in recent years, there have been efforts by some religious zealots to bring puritan element in Bollywood and to dent its beautiful fabric but could not succeed. Let it continue to be a common identity of Indian diaspora abroad.
